brass, birch tar oil
Birch tar oil is used in perfumery to produce a rich, smokey smell though in high concentrations it is unpleasant and evokes burnt motor oil. At one point it was used to tan leather in Russia, making it indispensable in leather-based scents like Chanel’s classic Cuir de Russie.
Birch tar (the precursor to birch tar oil in the dry distillation process) is one of the first known man-made adhesives.
